german shepherds are commonly used as police dogs due to their need to have a "job" to do. they are very affectionate and wonderful with young children. they are very protective and territorial, but highly adabtable and open to change. they are very vocal and are known to "talk back" when reprimanded. they make great service dogs due to their alert, calm, and obedient nature.
